Chris Rock's Advice to Young Comics

Mark Normand chimes in also...

This is gold!

I was just researching clips for this month’s clean comedy workshop and found this gem from Chris Rock about his most popular advice to young comics.

Even though Chris is not a “clean comic,” he says “when I’m talking to young comics I tell them don’t curse…the money is in not cursing.”

And it’s not just Chris Rock who thinks this…

On my most recent interview with Mark Normand he also talks about clean comedy and why every comic should know how to do it.

Mark says knowing how to write clean comedy is “very helpful and almost necessary…

even Date Attell can write clean…and it’s a great way to get your foot in the door.”

Without being clean, Mark could have never opened for Seinfeld or taped so many late night sets which is why he is so passionate about telling comics to “challenge yourself and write some clean.”

I don’t think Chris and Mark are telling comics to avoid being dirty but rather encouraging them to at least know how to be clean so you’re available for any and all opportunities that come your way.

I was just speaking with a younger comic who told me they had to turn down a $500 gig because they couldn’t do a 10 clean minutes of material. 🤯

I don’t want this to be you which is why I’m doing a Clean Comedy Workshop via Zoom on June 24th to teach you how to do clean comedy so when that $500 gig comes your way you can say yes!

Sincerely your comedy friend,
Joel Byars
