How to Conquer Stage Fright

How to Conquer Stage Fright
This week’s livestream dove deep on the topic of stage fright and it reminded me of my interview with Bo Burnham and his struggles with pre show panic attacks. This is actually a big reason he quit stand-up comedy for so long.
Before shows his manager would have to smack him on the back to help break the trance of his stage fright.
Now that is certainly one way to do it but this email will give you some less painful ways to conquer stage fright…
You’re Not Alone
The first thing to remember is that comedians at all levels get stage fright, so you are not alone in this feeling. Bo Burhnam is just one example of several pro comics I’ve interviewed that struggle with the pre show jitters. Having stage fright means you care and this energy can be used as fuel. The big thing that helps me use the fright as fuel is the preparation I do before the show…
Focus on What You Can Control
The more prepared I am for a set the more confident I am before the show. This preparation can range from rehearsing my set ahead of time to creating a detailed set list and even arriving to the venue early so I’m aren’t feeling rushed. All of these extra steps help me to be more relaxed and confident. This extra work proves to myself that I have done everything within my control to make this show a success. So when you’re feeling nervous, remind yourself of all the work you’ve done preparing to win this moment. And if all else fails ask yourself…
What’s the worst that can happen?
This simple question is a game changer. If you have been doing comedy at least a few weeks then chances are you have already bombed and survived to tell the tale. Once you realize that what you fear is not that bad, you have the power. I know I can be guilty of catastrophizing (is that a word?). Reminding myself of what’s in my control helps me to stay focused on the present moment and not what “could happen.” Instead of giving all the power to what bad could happen, ask yourself what good could happen?
The most important takeaway is to remember you are not alone. Hot Breath! is a for comics by comics community so let’s keep this connection going in our Facebook group here.
I will also be doing another Clean Comedy Workshop in June so click here to join the waitlist and get first dibs!
