My Favorite Road Gig Hack ($$$)
Life on the Road
This past weekend I performed at an all white party in Charlotte and was reminded of a quick trick that helps me make more money when on the road.
Even if you aren’t on the road yet, this is a trick you’ll want to know and save for later.
My gig was only 3.5 hours away and included a hotel in the booking. But instead of taking the hotel, I opted for a “buyout.”
Remember the term “buyout.”
This is a common phrase with bookers that essentially means if your booking includes a hotel, you have the option to get paid the cost of the hotel instead.
So if a hotel costs $150, the booker will pay you that $150 instead of booking you a room. All you have to do is tell the booker you’d prefer a “buyout” instead of getting the hotel room. #ChaChing!
Now this option does come with pros and cons. Since I opted for the buyout, instead of showering and getting show ready in a hotel room, I am in a parking deck changing clothes and eating before my show.
Of course this was the norm during my early days on the road where my only hotel room was my car before I started booking gigs with the buyout option.
All progress in this game is a process so enjoy the journey.
When and why you choose a buyout is up to your personal preference. I felt this show was close enough and started early enough for me to drive up and back in the same night.
I don’t always choose a buyout, but it’s a great option to keep in your arsenal to make a few extra bucks when you’re out on the road.
This is just one of the several on the road tricks I share on this week’s livestream you can watch here.
