I've Never Heard This Crowd Work Tip Before

It's easier than you think...

Today’s comedy tip has helped my comedy more than anything…

On Tuesday’s livestream I brought on my comedy buddy Winston Hodges.

Not only did he just release a Don’t Tell Special but he is also a killer comic.

We’ve done several shows together and I’m always impressed with how effortless his crowd work appears, so I had to ask him how he does it.

A lot of comics will try to force the funny out of their crowd work, but this one tip from Winston will hopefully change your approach.

Crowd work is mostly confidence and being comfortable with silence.

Winston Hodges

I’ve interviewed several comics about crowd work but this tip stuck with me the most.

Although a simple tip, it’s not easy.

Developing this confidence requires years of experience and repetition.

Comics of all levels struggle with this but I have a trick that helped me get more confident in silence…breathing.

Most comics forget to breathe on stage. We are jumping from one bit to the next before the audience has a chance to doubt us.

However, once you start embracing the silence on stage you will actually see a huge boost in laughs.

So before your next show, set the intention to breathe while on stage. Write it on your set list!

Do this one thing before your next show…

When you walk on stage and approach the mic, pause and take one deep breath before you start talking.

Inhale…and exhale…

Then start speaking.

This one mindful exercise has been a game changer for my confidence in silence on stage.

I have a feeling you will be pleasantly surprised the power this moment of silence can have on your set.

A great way to build more confidence on stage is with a daily writing routine off stage. If you’re currently struggling to write more, I designed a workshop based on my 14 years of trial and error to help you develop a writing habit you actually stick with. Click here to get the workshop!
